Why Chocolates on Sark?
Caragh Chocolates started on the kitchen at the Old Forge in Sark. With a recipe book and lashings of cream we set out to see how nice it would be to combine Sark Cream with really good Chocolate.
The results were wonderful and it has snowballed from there. It took three years to get everything ready and we sold our first boxes in March 1993 in the craft shop on Sark.
They were snapped up straight away and orders came in for lots more. It was great to see people really enjoying freshly made Chocolates with the added luxury of Sark cream.
By 1994 we were supplying outlets in Sark and Guernsey and our kitchen table was beginning to protest (as were the five children!) so we moved to empty premises next door. We needed bigger melting pots and more moulds but the feedback was so positive that we couldn't let people down.
In 1995 Caragh Couldridge, the creator of Caragh Chocolates, won the Good Housekeeping 'Women of the Year' award and the chocolates were pronounced the most wonderful that the 'GHI' team had tasted in a long time.
By 1998 we had moved to a purpose built chocolate kitchen which has a visitors display and shop so now people could come and see how we make them and buy their own selections and ask us all sorts of interesting questions.
During 1999 we went online and amazingly the kitchen on Sark is now selling chocolates world wide. We have kept our ideas simple and never compromised on the quality of our chocolates. our recipes are not complicated or fussy as you would loose out on the natural flavour. So that is how a chocolate business came to be on Sark.
When you order chocolates from Sark you will receive ones that have been made by hand, packed by hand, boxed for you, taken to the Post Office by bike, taken to the harbour by the Post Office tractor and trailer, taken to Guernsey on the cargo boat where it will join the mainstream postal service.
They will have travelled a long way but then you too can share in the goodness of Sark and enjoy something wonderful.
P.S. There is no cinema on Sark so none of us have seen the film "Chocolat" which is a very frequently asked question!!
